Recipes that Use Guérande Salt

sel de guerande.jpg

Most French butter is unsalted.  But not the butter made in Brittany!  People have been hand-harvesting sea salt from the marshes of Guérande, 55 miles northwest of Nantes, since Roman times. The marshes bear the label of “Site remarquable du Goût” (a site of culinary interest and excellence) and the salt has its own Indication Géographique Protégée (Protected Geographical Indication), just like a fine wine.

Salted Butter Caramel sauce is a delicious speciality of the region that combines Breton salted butter and sel de Guérande. Try it on crêpes!
